I have always loved to read!!! But I have also always loved to work. So, as a grew up I spent less time doing the things that I wanted to do and more time doing the things that I needed to do.
This past summer I worked a lot less and I read... A LOT!!! One of the books I read was Reading in the Wild by Donalyn Miller. Yes, please. It was like this woman was talking directly to me. Her work was much like I like to work. Reading and learning because it is fun. Sadly, at school we often have to do things because we have to, (testing and whatnot). I understand testing and am not trying to be on a soapbox, but I do not and will never believe that it should be our end goal in education. Anyway, when I found out that I was privileged enough to lead a 3rd grade reading group...well you can just say I was HAPPY! And I knew how I wanted it to be set up! We were going to be WILD READERS! We set up reading notebooks, discussed genres, and began reading and then writing about what we are reading. I devote a small amount of time each day reading books that I love, or books from my childhood to the students. The majority of the time, students read to themselves, books that they choose and love. I conference with them and help them pick out new books. They recommend books to each other and share their favorite picks. If reading is so important, we must make time to read...so that is what we do. ~shelton
